Methodology

Includes Bordetella pertussis by polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

Used to isolate organism Bordetella pertussis which is the organism associated with whooping cough.

Specimen Requirements

Collection kit supplied by Microbiology Laboratory. Kit contains swab, dry tube, and instructions.

 

1. Bend swab into a gentle curve.

2. Insert swab into anterior nares, and gently swab posterior.

3. Insert swab completely inside the dry tube. Screw cap on tightly. (Sterility is not required).

4. Label dry tube container with patient’s name (first and last) and date of birth.

5. Place properly labeled dry tube with swab into plastic biohazard bag and return to laboratory for processing.

6. Forward promptly at room temperature.

7. Causes for rejection:
A. Inadequately labeled specimen
B. Improper container

Note: Specimen source is required.

Reference Values

PCR: Bordetella species DNA not detected.
