Methodology

Useful for detecting diabetics (and others) at risk for renal failure; monitoring effectiveness of maneuvers such as blood pressure control and/or protein restriction, particularly in early diabetes; and to prevent overt proteinuria.

Specimen Requirements

Submit an entire 24-hour urine collection in a plastic urine container. No preservative.

Note: 1. Specimens should not be collected after exertion, in the presence of urinary tract infection, during acute illness, immediately after surgery, or after an acute fluid load. Specimens visibly contaminated with blood are not suitable for analysis of microalbumin.

2. Starting and ending times of collection are required.

3. Follow instructions in Urine Collection in Special Instructions.
