Methodology

Includes specific gravity, color, appearance, glucose, ketones, occult blood, nitrite, bilirubin, pH, urobilinogen, protein, leukocyte esterase, WBC, RBC, mucus, and bacteria. Components of a urinalysis can be ordered individually.

 

Microscopic examination is performed if one or more of the following tests are positive on the dipstick: leukocyte esterase, nitrite, protein, or occult blood.

 

Used to detect the presence of infection and/or other abnormalities in the urine.

Specimen Requirements

1. Collect at least 10 mL from a first-morning, voided urine in a screw-capped container.

2. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, date of birth or hospital account number, and department.

3. Forward promptly.

4. Specimen stability: stable for one and one-half hours at room temperature, or 8 hours if refrigerated.
