Methodology

Useful for diagnosis of T3 toxicosis.

When a thyroid cascade is ordered, if the TSH result is low and the free T4 is normal, a total T3 will be reflexed.

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Plasma

Container/Tube: Light green-top (lithium heparin) tube

Specimen: 1 mL of lithium heparin plasma

Transport Temperature: Ambient

Serum

Container/Tube: Plain, red-top tube or serum gel tube

Specimen: 1 mL of serum

Reference Values

01-23 months:              1.17-2.39 n/mL

02-12 years:                 1.05-2.07 ng/dL

13-20 years:                  0.86-1.92 ng/dL

Adult Euthyroid:            0.60 - 1.81 ng/mL

Adult Hypothyroid:        less than 0.60 ng/mL

Adult Hyperthyroid:       greater than 1.81 ng/mL
