Methodology

The ESR is the measurement, under standard conditions, of the rate of settling of erythrocytes in anticoagulated blood. It helps diagnose inflammatory diseases and necrotic processes.

Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube: Lavender-top (EDTA) tube or lavender-top (EDTA) MICROTAINER

Specimen: 3 mL of EDTA blood in lavender-top tube, or 500 ul of blood in lavender (EDTA) MICROTAINER 

Transport Temperature: Ambient

Specimen Stability: stable for 4 hours at room temperature or 12 hours if refrigerated

Collection Instructions: Tube must be at least half full. Invert several times to mix blood. Forward promptly. Specimen cannot be frozen.

Note: 1. If specimen cannot arrive within 4 hours of draw, send specimen refrigerated.

2. This test takes 1 hour to perform.

Reference Values

Males: 0-20 mm/hour

Females: 0-30 mm/hour
