Specimen Requirements

Patient Preparation

1. Patient should to avoid douches 48 to 72 hours prior to examination.

2. It is advisable, when possible, and especially if dysplasia or malignancy is suspected, to submit a Pap smear taken at the time of cervical biopsy.

 

Specimen Collection

1. Insert the Rovers Cervix Brush into the endocervical canal. Apply gentle pressure until the bristles form against the cervix. Maintaining gentle pressure, hold the stem between the thumb and forefinger. Rotate brush 5 times in a clockwise direction.

2. Transfer-preserve the entire specimen by placing your thumb against the back of the brush pad, and simply disconnect the entire brush from the stem into the SurePath preservative vial.

3. Place the cap on the vial and tighten.

4. Label vial with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, diagnosis, physician’s name, type of specimen, and hospital identification number and department.

Note: 1. Complete a “Seacoast Gynecological Cytology” form.

2. Include pertinent clinical information - age, last menstrual period, surgery, tumor radiation, chemotherapy, abnormal bleeding, previous abnormal Pap, site of origin, and exogenous hormones - oral contraceptives, etc., and forward it with specimen.

5. Causes for rejection:

A. No request form

B. Name on request form does not match name on specimen

C. Unlabeled specimen

D. No doctor’s name given
