Specimen Requirements

Specimen type: nasal swab

Container: Copan double swab collection transport swab

1. Place swab in left nare, press outside of nostril and rotate swab for 10 seconds.

2. Place swab in right nare, press outside of nostril and rotate swab for 10 seconds.

3. Return double swab to sterile Copan culture transport container.

4. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), hospital identification number or date of birth, date and time of specimen collection, and source of specimen.

5. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature only.

6. Causes for rejection:

A. Inadequately labeled specimen
B. Improper container

C. Insufficient specimen volume
