Methodology

Includes type of fluid, appearance, color, WBC count, and WBC differential in percent and actual count.

Useful for the evaluation of body fluid for infection or other disease processes.

Specimen Requirements

Acceptable Specimens:

Ascites, cyst, paracentesis, pericardial, pleural, thoracentesis fluid and bronchoalveolar lavage.

 

Specimen Volume required:

  • 1 mL of body fluid (ascites, cyst, paracentesis, pericardial, pleural and thoracentesis) in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube. Forward promptly.
  • 10 mL (minimum) bronchoalveolar lavage fluid

 

Note: If cultures, chemistry, or cytology tests are desired, orders must be submitted with separate specimens whenever possible.

Reference Values

Body Fluids - Clinical context should be taken into account when interpreting results.

 

Bronchoalveolar lavage - WBC: less than 300/uL

                                         Macrophages: 95-96%

                                         Lymphocytes: 3-4%

                                         Polys: less than 1%
