Methodology

Widely used as a measure of “oxygen debt”; provides an index of severity of circulatory failure. The accumulation of lactic acid is a recognized cause of metabolic acidosis.  Serial measurements required as part of sepsis protocol.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive to the lab within 15 minutes of draw.

 

Container/Tube: dark green sodium heparin

Specimen: Full tube

Transport Temperature: Refrigerate

Collection Instructions: Specimen must be placed on wet ice immediately.

Reference Values

0.4-2.0 mmol/L

Any lactic acid's 2 mmol/L or greater will reflex follow up lactic acid to be drawn 3 hours after the baseline draw.
