Methodology
Useful for evaluation of iron metabolism.
Profile consists of: Iron, Total Iron Binding and Iron Saturation
Patients treated with metal-binding drugs (e.g. deferoxamine) may have depressed iron values, as chelated iron may not properly react in the iron assay.

Specimen Requirements
Container/Tube: Light green (lithium heparin) tube, plain red or gold serum gel tube -Hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.
Specimen: 1 mL of plasma or serum
Transport Temperature: Ambient
Collection Instructions: Fasting (8 hour) recommended but not required.
