Test Code HBSABB Hepatitis B Surface Antibody, Serum

Additional Codes

LAB472

Methodology

The presence of hepatitis B surface antibody is indicative of previous hepatitis B infection or exposure or immunity to hepatitis B virus infection. Usually appears approximately 5 months after exposure.

The assay results may be used as an aid in the determination of susceptibility to HBV infections in individuals prior to or following HBV vaccination, or where vaccination status is unknown.

The performance of the assay has not been established for patients less than 13 years old or greater than 91 years old.

Performing Laboratory

St. Mary's Regional Medical Center-Chemistry

CPT: 86706

Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube: Plain, red-top tube or serum gel tube

Specimen: 2 mL of serum

Transport Temperature: Ambient

Reference Values

This assay does not differentiate between a vaccine-induced immune response and an immune response induced by infection with HBV. To determine if the anti-HBS response is due to vaccine or HBV infection, a total anti-HBc may be performed if requested. Results should always be interpreted in conjunction with a patient's medical history, clinical presentation, and other findings.

Results >10 mIU/mL are the accepted criteria for protective immunity to HBV infection.

A reactive anti-HBs result does not exclude co-infection by another hepatitis virus.

Results < 10 mIU/mL are considered non-reactive. The patient is considered not to have protective immunity to HBV infection.
