Specimen Requirements
Patient PreparationGive patient 50 g test dose of glucose to ingest. Draw blood specimen for a non-fasting glucose 1 hour following test dose. Some physicians may request a fasting specimen prior to the administration of the test dose.
Specimen Collection
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Plasma
Container/Tube: Dark green-top (sodium heparin) tube or light green-top (lithium heparin) tube
Specimen: 1 mL of heparinized plasma
Transport Temperature: Ambient
Collection Instructions: Fasting (8 hour)
Note: 1. Indicate plasma.
2. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).
Serum
Container/Tube: Plain, red-top tube or serum gel tube
Specimen: 1 mL of serum
Transport Temperature: Ambient
Collection Instructions: Fasting (8 hour)
Note: 1. Indicate serum.
2. Label specimen appropriately (serum).
