Methodology

Used to detect hepatobiliary function; currently the most sensitive enzymatic indicator of liver disease. Used to determine whether observed elevations of alkaline phosphatase are due to skeletal disease (normal GGT) or reflect the presence of hepatobiliary disease (elevated GGT). A screening test for occult alcoholism.

Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Plasma

Container/Tube: light green-top (lithium heparin) tube

Specimen: 1 mL of heparinized plasma

Transport Temperature: Ambient

Collection Instructions: Grossly hemolyzed specimen may cause falsely elevated results.

Note:

1. Indicate plasma.
2. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).

 

Serum

Container/Tube: Plain, red-top tube or gold serum gel tube

Specimen: 1 mL of serum

Transport Temperature: Ambient

Collection Instructions: Grossly hemolyzed specimen may cause falsely elevated results.
