Methodology

Immunochromatographic rapid test for the qualitative detection of Shiga toxins 1 and 2 (also called Verotoxins) produced by E. coli in cultures derived from clinical stool specimens.

Specimen Requirements

1. Submit stool in a clean, dry container (only a very small amount is needed).

2. Label container with patient's name, date of birth, and date and time of collection.

3. Forward promptly at ambient temperature. If there is a delay in transport, send specimen refrigerated.

4. Specimen MUST be received in the lab within 2 hours of collection.

5. Specimens must be transported in biohazard bags to prevent cross-contamination.

6. Causes for rejection:

- Inadequately labeled specimen

- Improper container

- Improper specimen volume

- Specimen not received in lab within 2 hours of collection

Reference Values

Negative for Shiga Toxin 1 and Negative for Shiga toxin 2.
