Specimen Requirements

1. Obtain a UTM kit (Universal Transport Medium collection kit).

2. Gently insert the nasal swab (UTM collection kit) along the floor of either nostril, beneath the inferior turbinate. Aiming toward the same side earlobe, the swab should be inserted approximately 1 inch.

3. Swab should then be rolled several times against the inside nasal wall and withdrawn. Return swab to original container.

4. The entire process should not be painful; most subjects describe a "tickling" sensation (such as that felt prior to sneezing) when properly performed.

5. Label specimen with patient's name (first and last), hospital identification number or date of birth, date and time of collection, and source of specimen.

6. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature. If there is a delay in transport, send specimen refrigerated. Specimen stable at ambient temperature for 24 hours, or for 7 days if stored between 2-8° C.

7. Causes for rejection:

    a.  Inadequately labeled specimen

    b.  Improper container
