Methodology

Includes ABO, Rh, and direct Coombs. If direct Coombs is positive, elution and antibody identification will be performed when necessary.

Used to determine if a Rh-negative mother is a Rho(D) immune globulin (RhoGAM®) candidate. Used to determine if maternal antibody is coating fetal red cells.

Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Blood, EDTA
Container/Tube:
Pink-top (EDTA) tube
Specimen: 10 mL of cord blood
Transport Temperature: Ambient
Collections Instructions: Inpatient must have a hospital wristband and a OB identification bracelet.
Note:

1. Cord blood specimens from all mothers will be stored for 1 month in Blood Bank.
2. Label specimen with the baby’s last name, mother’s full name, mother’s account number, OB identification bracelet number, and date and time of draw. Specimen must be appropriately labeled with “Cord Blood” label.

 

Blood, Plain
Container/Tube: Plain, red-top VACUTAINER (no gel in bottom of tube)
Specimen: 10 mL of cord blood
Transport Temperature: Ambient
