Methodology

Includes Giemsa stained smears and iron stained smears.

Biopsy and biopsy touch prep smears are included if biopsy collected.

Useful in evaluation of blood cell production and to diagnose hematopoietic disorders.

Specimen Requirements

Physician should make an appointment with the laboratory so that a technologist will be available to bring the slides and preservatives and assist in making the smears. Appointments are available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m to 2:45 p.m. Brief clinical information must be provided. CBC should be done the same day or within 48 hours of procedure.

 

Physician obtains 4 mL of bone marrow aspirate for smears and clot sections and a piece of bone for biopsy. Technologist forwards promptly at ambient temperature.

Reference Values

An interpretive report will be provided.
