Specimen Requirements

1. Collect at least 2 mm of wedge or needle biopsy on a saline moistened piece of gauze.

2. Submit tissue in a screw-capped, sterile container.

3. Label container with source and site of specimen, patient’s name, date of birth, date of collection, physician’s name, and hospital identification number and department.

4. Maintain sterility and forward promptly. Specimen must be hand delivered to technician in Histology Department.

5. Causes for rejection:
A. Inadequately labeled specimen
B. Received in formalin
C. Insufficient specimen volume
Note: 1. Specimen source is required.

2. “Tissue Examination” slip and “Brigham and Women’s Renal Biopsy” requisition must be filled out by nephrologist.
