Methodology
Directed donation involves the selection of one’s own blood donors for planned or anticipated, non-emergency transfusion. These donors may be friends or family.

Specimen Requirements
The patient’s physician must contact the Red Cross at 800-462-9400 to request directed donation service. The Red Cross will then contact the patient to discuss arrangements for directed donation and donor selection. Donors must make the appointments to give blood for the patient through the Red Cross. Blood must be drawn ≤20 days and ≥6 working days prior to the scheduled procedure date.
