Test Code 00009 Sensitivity Testing

Methodology

Includes sensitivity for urines, and gram negatives and gram positives of significant isolates.

Used to determine whether the patient’s organism is sensitive or resistant to an antimicrobial agent.

Performing Laboratory

St. Mary's Regional Medical Center-Microbiology

Specimen Requirements

Culture isolate. Antimicrobial agent appropriate to the organism and specimen source will be chosen from the panels listed below.

Gram-negative bacillus: amikacin, ampicillin, ampicillin/sulbactam, aztreonam, cefazolin, cefepime, cefotaxime, cefuroxime,  ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, ertapenem, gentamicin, imipenem, levofloxacin, *nitrofurantoin, piperacillin/tazobactam, tigecycline, tobramycin, and trimethoprim/ sulfamethoxazole. Screening and confirmation tests for extended spectrum beta-lactamases are performed for Escherichia coli and Klebsiella species isolates. Screening for carbapenemase resistance is performed on all isolates of Enterobacteriaceae. If positive, KPC molecular testing and modified Hodge testing are added and billed as confirmatory tests. If susceptibilities have already been performed, KPC molecular testing and/or modified Hodge are available for individual order.

Staphylococcus species: ampicillin/sulbactam, ampicillin, amoxacillin, ciprofloxacin, clindamycin, daptomycin, erythromycin, gentamicin, levofloxacin, linezolid, *nitrofurantoin, oxacillin, penicillin, tetracycline, TMP/SMX, and vancomycin.

Enterococcus species: ampicillin, ciprofloxacin, daptomycin, gentamicin synergy, levofloxacin, linezolid, *nitrofurantoin, penicillin, and vancomycin.

Streptococcus species: dependent upon species

For antimicrobial agents not part of above: testing is available upon special request at an additional charge per antimicrobial.

* for urine only
